As the proud oldest of 4 brothers, this comment from Mike Kinney about his brother, NCAA AA and Iowa HS State Runner-Up, Todd Kinney hit me in the feels…

I love seeing that. Always warms my heart when I read of others out there being just as proud of their siblings as I always have been. It’s awesome that he has this pic framed in his office to this day!
Cool stuff, Mike!
Todd Kinney graduated from Dewitt-Central HS in 1988 and was a multi-sport athlete. He excelled in football, wrestling and track and field. As a Senior, he was 1st team All-State as a defensive lineman. In track, he raked in several prestigious awards in the discus, for as a Junior, he placed 3rd at the Boys State Track meet and as a senior he was the Big Bend Champion, Iowa High School Athletic Association Discus Champion, and set the school record which stands today at 163 feet-9 inches.
However, wrestling was his passion. He had a very good career, finishing 6th and 2nd at state. His Senior year, he finished 2nd behind John Oostendorp of West Liberty in the finals. In offseason work, Kinney was a Junior Freestyle State Champion, Junior Greco Roman State Champion, and placed 4th in the National Junior Olympics, Freestyle Division. He went on to wrestle at Iowa State University. As a Sophomore, he was the Big 8 Heavyweight Champion, a feat he matched during his Senior season. During his Senior year, Todd also was a semi-finalist in the NCAA Wrestling Championships, eventually finishing 6th and earning All-American status. It should also be noted that he defeated longtime rival, John Oostendorp in this tournament. This was the only defeat Oostie suffered in this tourney, for he went on to fight back for 3rd place.

A shout-out to one of the most impressive HS athletes!
I’ve got to give a shout-out to one of the most impressive HS athletes I have ever seen go through my own community and former High School of Mediapolis… Payton Harris is just a Sophomore and has accomplished some INCREDIBLE feats in her first 2 years of HS in multiple sports! A couple months ago she placed 2nd at the 2026 Iowa Girls HS State Track Tournament in the Discus. She won 8 first place medals, set a meet record at West Burlington, set the Mepo HS school record, etc! She set her PR and broke the school record when she threw for 137-07 at the State Tournament!
Right now she’s playing softball and doing so at a higher level than I’ve about seen anyone do it at the HS level. This season as a Sophomore, Payton has hit 15 HR’s, 34 RBI’s and has a batting average of .464! 😳 She actually hit 10 HR’s before she even began the year this year, hitting 4 as an 8th grader on varsity in 2024 and hitting 6 as a Freshman last year. She has 25 career HR’s and she’s not even halfway done with her HS career! 😮 She is also the team’s ace. She’s currently sporting a 1.79 ERA on the mound with 55 Strikeouts!
Payton is actually a former wrestler. As an 8th grader, she was a member of the first ever organized Mediapolis Girls Wrestling Team. To be honest, I don’t recall her ever losing a match. She went 3-0 with quick, easy pins most nights. She doesn’t wrestle anymore, for I think she plays basketball, but she has been awesome at that too!
Payton is the daughter of Robbie and Alicia Harris. Robbie is a former Mepo HS wrestler. Any of you remember 2005 Mepo HS State Champ, Micah Keller (RIP)?! Guy was like a little brother to me. Anyways, if you were ever around Micah in those days, you probably met Robbie, for those 2 were inseparable. Payton’s little sister, Harper is also having a great softball season this year as an 8th grader!

In 1996, T.J. Williams of Mt Carmel HS became the 5th ever 4X HS state champion in the state of Illinois! Collegiately he would become a 3X NCAA D1 All-American/2X National Champ for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He won NCAA titles as a sophomore at 149 pounds in 1999 and as a senior at 157 pounds in 2001 while finishing third at 157 pounds as a junior in 2000. He was also a JUCO National Runner-Up at 157 lbs for Lassen College in CA his first year out of HS. T.J. also won 3 Big 10 Titles and finished with a D1 collegiate record of 98-1 with a winning percentage of 98.9…An Iowa Hawkeye wrestling record.
T.J.’s older brothers; Joe and Steve were also legends on the mat. They were all a product of longtime wrestling club, “Harvey Twisters.” SJoe won 4 Illinois HS State Championships and Steve won 2 for Mount Carmel HS. Joe was also a 3X NCAA Champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Steve won 2 JUCO titles for Iowa Central Community College Kennedy-King CC! 🔨
